Arsenal fans ‘unhappy’ after transfer bombshell – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes former Arsenal transfer chief Edu could be the right man to spearhead Evangelos Marinakis’s plans in Brazil as he looks to take over Vasco da Gama.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed that potential deal could be a key reason behind why Edu left the Emirate..
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 4 November Edu quit Arsenal in a bombshell move after agreeing a triple-your-money deal with the group run by Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis.
The ex-Brazil international midfielder returned to the club in 2019 as technical director before transitioning into a sporting director role.
The Telegraph reported on 19 November Marinakis is now in talks to buy a controlling stake in Vasco da Gama, with Edu lined up for a key role with the Brazilian side.
Edu could be right man for Vasco da Gama after Arsenal exit
Wyness believes Edu could be the right man to get the Vasco fans on board with the potential takeover.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Marinakis will have spoken to Edu.
“If in fact he has done, I’m sure he’s done it in the appropriate way and would have sold him a vision of what the group is trying to do with Olympiakos and Forest.
“Can Forest now establish themselves? They are starting to achieve that goal of establishing themselves in the Premier League and then another club in Brazil, which could be a great feeder for talent coming through. It makes ultimate sense.
“But you do need experience at that level to be able to mould the clubs together. That’s the biggest issue that multi-club groups have not done is they have not spent the time to actually make the thing work properly together.
“You have got to spend time and that’s where Edu would be very good at that sort of situation. I think that may have appealed to him.

“I know in Brazil, the Vasco fans were not happy. They would think that if they were part of that, would they be second fiddle to Forest in the Premier League or to Olympiakos?
“That was his first club and the club he loves, so they wouldn’t want to be the third fiddle in that situation. But overall, it’s a very compelling situation.
“With Edu there to get it right, it could work very well for Marinakis.”
