Kieran Maguire hails Arsenal for emulating Liverpool as major overhaul reportedly begins

Arsenal are following in the footsteps of Man City and Liverpool by pursuing a data-led scouting approach.

That is according to finance expert and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after the Guardian revealed that Arsenal had begun the process of recruiting a number of new talent spotters.

The club made 55 employees redundant in August, including several high profile members of their scouting team.

And this current recruitment drive is part of the Gunners’ move towards a data-centred approach.

Maguire praised Arsenal for their forward-thinking, observing that some of the Premier League’s most successful clubs have adopted a similar model.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “I think Arsenal have seen how other clubs with very sophisticated data analytical teams have been successful.

“In my opinion, the clubs with the three best sets of data analysts are Man City, Liverpool and Leicester. All of them have had a decent five years or so.

“So those clubs have invested and are reaping the rewards. Arsenal are, to a certain extent, playing catch-up but this is the way forwards.

“Traditional scouting plays a part and everything should be used to complement the overall recruitment strategy.

“I think they now realise the benefits of having a data-driven system. It will work well together with the physical observations of the scouting team.”

Arsenal are in danger of failing to qualify for Europe for the first time in 25 years.

They face Crystal Palace and Brighton in their remaining two matches this season.
