Arsenal idol issues ‘big’ Martin Odegaard verdict amid £80m claim

Kevin Campbell has heaped praise on Martin Odegaard for his start to life as Arsenal captain.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said the 23-year-old “leads by example” with the “big quality” he possesses.

Odegaard scored a brace on Saturday as Mikel Arteta’s side moved to the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

Speaking on Sky Sports (20 August), co-commentator Alan Smith said the left-footed midfielder is worth £80million.

Arsenal signed the Norway international in a £30million deal from Real Madrid 12 months ago.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Odegaard’s form, Campbell said: “I like Odegaard.

“He is a silent captain in a sense. He leads by example. He leaves everything out on the pitch.

“As a technical player he dictates the rhythm of the team. You may not think he is going anything but he gets the ball and starts to find passes. He gets [Buyako] Saka and [Gabriel] Jesus involved.

“It is great to see him get on the scoresheet. He came under a bit of flak for not shooting in the Palace game. On Saturday, he shoots twice and he scores twice.

“We need goals from everywhere this season. We need six to 10 goals from him this season. That would be a good output.

“He possesses big quality. He is relishing it being captain.”
