Arsenal idol verdict on Granit Xhaka 'noise' after new quotes emerge - 'wow'

Kevin Campbell has lauded Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka for his “outstanding” performance against Brentford on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Gunners and Everton striker confessed he has “not been the greatest supporter” of the 29-year-old in recent years.

Xhaka starred for Mikel Arteta’s side in a 3-0 win over Brentford on Sunday (18 September).

The centre-midfielder captained the Gunners in west London after Martin Odegaard was ruled out through injury.

Arsenal’s travelling fans showed their appreciation by singing Xhaka’s name at the full-time whistle.

As quoted by the Mirror (19 September), the Switzerland international reacted by saying he “never thought this would happen.”

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Xhaka’s turnaround at the Emirates, Campbell said: “There has been a lot of noise around Granit Xhaka.

“A lot of people were happy to see him leave. I have not been his greatest supporter after what he did with the shirt and the armband.

“You have to say what you see though. For the last year he has been really good. He has really improved.

“He is playing in a role that suits him. It looks like he has the confidence of the manager. He is doing much more than he has done in previous seasons.

“I thought he was outstanding at the weekend. He was man of the match for me against Brentford. Both defensively and offensively he was great.

“Wow, what a difference a year makes. He is creating chances more than I have ever seen. Fair play to him.

“He is an experienced player but he is still developing in this team. That is the beauty of it. You have to give Mikel Arteta credit for it.”
