Arsenal news: Stefan Borson taken aback by ‘strange’ Edu exit update
Arsenal’s outgoing chief Edu has made a “strange” decision to leave the Emirates after agreeing to join Evangelos Marinakis’s group of clubs.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the sporting director could be seeking more money and power as he prepares to leave north London.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 4 November Edu has quit Arsenal after agreeing a triple-your-money deal with the group run by Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis.
The ex-Brazil international midfielder returned to the club in 2019 as technical director before transitioning into a sporting director role.
He has forged a close relationship with manager Mikel Arteta, with the pair working together to transform Arsenal into title challengers in the past two seasons.
Edu set to leave Arsenal at ‘very odd’ time
Borson believes it’s a “very odd” time to leave as his work over the past few years could come to fruition at the Emirates this season.
“I think it’s a strange situation,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I don’t really understand it. It’s almost like there’s a missing piece to it.
“I know how it’s been described, but it seems to me a slightly odd move you would leave Arsenal just because it doesn’t have multi-club and go to a multi-club setup with Nottingham Forest.
“The reason I say that is because it doesn’t matter who Nottingham Forest buy as the head of that multi-club group, it’s very unlikely that any of those clubs are going to be anywhere near the scale of Arsenal.
“I don’t know, maybe it’s nothing more than he wanted quite a lot more money and quite a lot more power.
“We may all look at the size of the individual club as being the most important thing, but ultimately, maybe he’s been there a long time and he just wants a bit more money and responsibility.

“It seems a bit strange to me to leave right now in a season where Arsenal are still clearly one of the favourites.
“But this seems like a season where a lot of work he’s put in over the last five years could all come to fruition, so it seems a very odd time to leave.”
