Arsenal player ratings v Southampton: Second string stars slip-up

By Alex Stevens

Football Insider rates the Arsenal players in their 2-0 defeat in the League Cup quarter-final against Southampton on Wednesday night.

Emiliano Martinez 4 – Arsenal’s third keeper let his first goals in for Arsenal after two clean sheets in the EFL Cup. He couldn’t do much about the Southampton goals but didn’t look completely convincing when called upon in the second half, apart from one decent save.

Carl Jenkinson 3 – Lost the ball for the second Southampton goal and didn’t inspire much confidence throughout in a poor performance in defence and up the field.

Gabriel 4 – An emotional start to the night as he choked back tears after holding up a banner for the Chapecoense football team, but didn’t look solid at the back.

Rob Holding 5 – Another decent shift from the Arsenal centre-back but he was up against a striker who hasn’t scored all season.

Kieran Gibbs 4 – Didn’t really put a foot wrong but didn’t add much in the way of attack until it was too late.

Francis Coquelin 5 – Gave 100% but it wasn’t enough as Arsenal failed to dominate in midfield.

Mohamed Elneny 3 – The only player to keep his place in Wenger’s side picked up the first yellow card of the game and an injury before half-time.

Aaron Ramsey 5 – Much more cut and thrust in the second half, and at the heart of the ultimately fruitless Arsenal fightback.

Jeff Reine Adelaide 5 – Some glimpses of the skill that he’s got in his locker but he wasn’t always in control of it and seemed to surprise himself when the audacious came off.

Alex Iwobi 6 – Looked the main threat for Arsenal but had little help and couldn’t break Southampton down on his own. Arsenal’s best player on a very disappointing night.

Lucas Perez 3 – A few misplaced passes and a very anonymous night as Arsenal had scant few chances on goal. Had their first shot on target but it was more of a backpass.

Xhaka (for Elneny 42mins) – 5
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (for Reine Adelaide 62mins) – 5
Ainsley Maitland-Niles (for Jenkinson 64mins) – 4

In other Arsenal news, this star player has been said to be open for a return to his former club, which will alarm fans.
