Kevin Campbell has tipped Nicolas Pepe to replace Bukayo Saka in the starting XI when Arsenal face Liverpool on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker claimed it would be a “smart move” to bench Saka for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side as he is “hitting a bit of a wall”.
The 19-year-old withdrew from England’s squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers with a hamstring injury, but it is not thought to be serious.
According to Football London, the winger is in contention to feature against Liverpool this weekend.
Saka has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers this season, with his 35 appearances across all competitions yielding six goals and seven assists.
When asked by Football Insider if he expected Saka to be risked on Saturday, Campbell said: “I think Pepe might come in for Saka.
“He has done really well when given the opportunity of late so I think Pepe will probably start against Liverpool.
“Yes, it would be a blow to not have Saka because he has been amazing this season, he’s been carrying the club.
“He is hitting a wall at the moment though. He is picking up little injuries and his form has not been as high level as it usually is.
“I think it would be a smart move to rest him this weekend.”
Pepe has scored three goals in his last six Premier League starts for Mikel Arteta’s side.
A win on Saturday would take the Gunners to within one point of their opponents.
