Arsenal told to ‘beat Spurs’ to ‘brilliant’ Spence signing after Sky update – pundit

Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal to make a concrete move for Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest defender Djed Spence.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Gunners and Everton striker heaped praise on the 21-year-old who has the “speed, control and passing” to be a success at the Emirates.

According to Sky Sports (18 January), Arsenal, Tottenham and Leeds United are interested in signing the right-back this month.

Spence has impressed since joining Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan from Middlesbrough in August of last year.

He produced a man of the match performance earlier this month as Steve Cooper’s side knocked the Gunners out the FA Cup.

Campbell believes Spence could replace Cedric Soares at the Emirates.

“I think Cedric’s race has been run at Arsenal,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Spence really impressed me in that game against Arsenal. I know we weren’t at our best but he was brilliant nonetheless.

“He showed such great speed, control, passing and defensive qualities in that game. He is still a young man as well so he is only going to get better.

“I think it would be very smart business to get him in. He’d give Mikel Arteta another option, that’s for sure.

“Get him in and beat Spurs to the deal”.

Spence has contributed one goal and one assist in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.

He has 18 months left on his contract with his parent club Middlesbrough.
