Arsenal must sign a right-back in a similar mould to Kieran Tierney this summer in order to move to the “next level.”

That is according to ex-Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Spanish outlet Mundo reported that Arsenal are monitoring the situation of Barcelona-bound right-back Emerson Royal.

Barcelona and Real Betis split Royal’s £10.2m transfer fee from Atletico Mineiro in 2019, with the 22-year-old spending the last two-and-a-half seasons in Seville.

As per the terms of the joint-deal, he is due to join Barcelona in the summer, though apparently that has not dissuaded Arsenal’s interest.

Tierney signed for the Gunners from Celtic for £25million in 2019 and has proved a hit at left-back, endearing himself to fans with his engine and wide skill set.

Campbell stressed the importance of having versatile full-back options, especially given that it looks like Hector Bellerin will leave the club in the summer.

He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “We need somebody who is like Tierney but on the right-hand side, somebody who will give us some thrust and some endeavour down that flank.

We need a player who is able to play with multiple types of players because everyone who plays on the right-wing is different.

To get to that next level you have to have top full-backs. I think Bellerin might leave so for the right-back slot we will have Cedric and the new signing.”

Tierney, a 16-time Scotland international, has featured 56 times for Arsenal, scoring three goals and laying on eight assists.

Royal won his first Brazil cap after his move to Europe in 2019 but has failed to turn out for the side international since then.

In other news, a top pundit has questioned whether Bernd Leno is good enough to be Arsenal’s number one long-term and urged them to sign a new shot-stopper.
