Aston Villa are about to make ‘big mistake’ with Danny Ings after source’s update – pundit

Aston Villa should not sell Danny Ings this summer despite a difficult first season at the club.

That’s according to former Villains hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Ings’ future.

A Villa source told Football Insider (25 May) that the club will listen to offers for the centre-forward 12 months on from his £25million arrival from Southampton.

Ings, 29, endured an indifferent 2021-22 campaign at Aston Villa.

After scoring in each of his first two Premier League games for his new side, the striker only scored five more goals in another 28 league outings.

McAvennie insists Ings will score more goals if he is given a consistent run in Steven Gerrard’s side.

“I wouldn’t sell him, he is a wonderful player,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I think he just needs to play more games. The more he plays, the better he gets. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.

“He’s in a bit of a tricky spot because he didn’t score the goals last season.

“We didn’t see the form he had at Southampton and you can understand why Gerrard might want to sign an upgrade this summer.

“I think it would be a big mistake to sell him, honestly I do. He could do amazing things at that club.”
