Martinez mad to consider Aston Villa exit with Man United ready to ‘pull trigger’ – Campbell
Emiliano Martinez should not even entertain the idea of quitting Aston Villa in favour of Manchester United.
That is according to ex-Arsenal and West Brom striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively after Football Insider revealed that Manchester United are ready to swoop for the 28-year-old goalkeeper.
United plan to give their goalkeeping ranks a makeover in the summer and a significant budget has been set aside to make two new signings.
The club will consider offers for experienced campaigner and long-time number one David De Get but understudy Dean Henderson, 24, will remain at Old Trafford.
Martinez has wowed Villa fans since signing from Arsenal in a £20million summer deal, keeping 14 clean sheets in the league and averaging 3.64 saves per match (Wyscout).
The Argentinian would be mad to leave Villa in favour of a team where he wouldn’t necessarily be first-choice, claims Campbell.
He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “He’s only just got there. Why would you go to Manchester United?
“If you left Arsenal because you wanted to play, why would you go to United to be part of a rotation? It makes no sense.
“It’s going to be interesting to see if they pull the trigger on that one. But I can’t see him leaving Aston Villa.
“He wants to play. He would need Man United to turn around and say: ‘You’re gonna be number one.’ Unless they lose Henderson, I just don’t see it.”
Henderson has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season while De Gea has featured on 29 occasions.
Aston Villa have had a dip in form in recent weeks but still find themselves in a very respectable 10th position with 10 matches remaining.
