‘Aston Villa could accelerate £150m sale’ – fans explode after crushing PSR blow

Aston Villa have some tough decisions to make over the coming weeks as they are required to make at least one big-money sale.

The West Midlands giants have faced profit and sustainability (PSR) issues over the past couple of years after spending close to the allowable losses limit.

Under the PSR rules, top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Villa posted a club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their turnover increased from £217.7million in 2022-23 to £275.7million, while their losses fell from £119.6million to £85.4million.

Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman all moved on before last year’s accounting deadline to help them avoid a spending breach.

Unai Emery’s side are believed to be close to the limit again this season despite earning around £70million in Champions League prize money

Aston Villa could match Chelsea after £200m update

The Mail reported on 7 May Villa need to make at least one significant sale before 30 June to avoid breaching the PSR rules.

That news has gone down terribly with the club’s fans, with many questioning how that can still be the case following Jhon Duran’s £64million move to Al-Nassr in January.

Emiliano Martinez, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins have all been linked with exits over the past few weeks.

Villa are also believed to be exploring selling stakes in their women’s team to help them comply with the PSR regulations.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to owners BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for last season.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Villa could sell their women’s team for around £150million

Aston Villa could receive instant PSR boost

Villa Park chiefs could look to accelerate the sale of their women’s team to avoid Emery losing at least one of his key players again this summer.

While it wouldn’t be a long-term fix to their PSR issues, it would ensure they keep their core group together following their progress over the past couple of years.

Villa are in the mix for Champions League football again as they currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-place Newcastle United.

There are five Champions League spots on offer this season due to England’s coefficient ranking.
