Aston Villa could make ‘huge statement’ after journalist’s Bissouma udpate – Phillips

Kevin Phillips has claimed it would be “a huge statement of intent” if Aston Villa sign Yves Bissouma from Brighton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Claret and Blue said the 25-year-old is “an exciting player who will only get better in the future.”

According to The Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace (12 January), Steven Gerrard’s side are interested in signing the £40million-valued Bissouma.

The Mali international has 18 months left on his contract with the Seagulls.

Villa have already secured the signatures of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne this month.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Bissouma, Phillips said: “Bissouma would be a massive statement from Villa.

“That would make it three of the best signings in a January window for a long, long time.

“It has not taken much time for Coutinho to get going. I expect Digne to settle quickly as he is a very good player and you’d expect the same from Bissouma if he was to come in. He’s got game time under his belt this season.

“Bissouma is an exciting player and one who will only get better in the future. If he came through the door it would be a huge statement of intent from Villa.

“Three fantastic signings, that’s for sure.”

Bissouma has made 15 appearances for Brighton this season.

On Twitter (12 April), Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker heaped praise on the “exceptional” midfielder.
