Villa recently added Nottingham Forest captain Henri Lansbury to their midfield ranks when the 26-year-old made a permanent transfer on Friday afternoon.
If Hourihane were to join the Midlands club then he would be competing for a midfield place alongside, Mile Jedinak, Aaron Tshibola, Ashley Westwood, Gary Gardner and now Lansbury.
Bruce’s side have struggled in the middle of the park this season, with their midfield men only scoring two goals.
Additionally, they have also lost their last three encounters in all competitions as Bruce looks to add a bit of bite to his midfield.
They will now take on Simon Grayson’s Preston North End on Saturday afternoon, looking to end their four-match winless streak.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, this sensational striker bid is set to happen by Sunday with reports suggesting it could be a loan deal.
