Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Johnstone starting v Newcastle

By Dominic Toner

Sam Johnstone has retained his place in Aston Villa’s goal for the league match against Newcastle – and the club’s supporters were angry with the decision on Twitter.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is starting in Monday night’s Championship clash against promotion-chasing Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Steve Bruce has decided to make four alterations to his side, with Mile Jedinak, Birkir Bjarnason, Tommy Elphick and Neil Taylor drafted in.

Meanwhile, Albert Adomah, Jack Grealish, Jordan Amavi and Nathan Baker have been dropped.

Villa fans were extremely frustrated with the decision to keep Johnstone in net, despite a number of struggling performances recently.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Johnstone moved to Villa Park in January on loan from Manchester United and established himself as the number one option.

However, the shot stopper has struggled to make a major impact and is without a clean sheet in his first seven appearances for the Midlands giants.

He shipped three goals in the club’s previous match against Barnsley as they suffered a 3-1 defeat.

Johnstone will be desperate to prove his doubters wrong on Monday night against Newcastle, but will be facing the league’s top scorer Dwight Gayle.

Bruce’s side have lost their last four consecutive league games and will be keen to end their poor form.
