Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Bjarnason display against Rotherham

By Harry Sykes

Birkir Bjarnason broke down with an injury after being recalled to the Aston Villa starting XI – and supporters claimed on Twitter their club have a left wing curse.

Bjarnason was recalled to the Villa team in their 1-0 Championship win at Rotherham on Saturday as a replacement for youngster Andre Green, who is sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury.

But the Iceland international lasted just 33 minutes at the New York Stadium before limping out of the action with what appeared to be a knee injury.

An icepack was strapped to Bjarnason’s joint and he had to be assisted off the pitch by two members of Villa’s medical staff.

Bjarnson hobbled off with Jack Grealish coming on in his place, but the Villa academy product then lasted just 11 minutes.

Grealish himself looked to be in some distress with a knee injury of his own and departed on the stroke of half-time with his knee taped.

Villa fans could not believe the luck of their players and took to social media to reflect on Bjarnason’s afternoon.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Bjarnason, 28, moved to Villa during the January transfer window but has struggled to make an impact at the Midlands club.

Nevertheless, Steve Bruce’s side secured a third consecutive win on Saturday to move well clear of the relegation zone and take their points haul to 45 points from 35 matches.

In other Aston Villa news, a chief executive has revealed this 24-year-old member of Bruce’s squad was joining West Ham.
