Aston Villa fans 'rubbing their hands together' after source's 'brilliant' Digne update - Whelan
Aston Villa fans will be “rubbing their hands together” as the “brilliant” signing of Everton left-back Lucas Digne gets closer, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hinted that the 28-year-old’s arrival could be thanks to the “pulling power” of manager Steven Gerrard.
This site exclusively revealed today (10 January) that Aston Villa had a bid of £22million for Digne accepted by Everton.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the France international has been given the green light to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with the Midlands club.
It is believed the initial £22m fee will be topped up by performance-related add-ons.
Whelan insisted it is “exciting times” at Villa Park following another “brilliant” addition.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Exciting times for Aston Villa, isn’t it?
“Philippe Coutinho through the door, and it looks like Digne will be following him in.
“Villa fans must be rubbing their hands together again now, just as they would have been earlier on this season.
“Again, they’re getting their deals done swiftly and efficiently – and it just shows the pulling power of Gerrard. I think it’s the chance of working with someone like him that is attracting this calibre of player to the club.
“Targett hasn’t done too much wrong, but the competition for places will just push him to be better and better.
“It’s a brilliant deal – his service from wide areas is second-to-none.”
Aston Villa announced the loan-to-buy capture of Coutinho from Barcelona last Friday (7 January).
Digne had been out of favour at Everton following a training ground bust-up with manager Rafa Benitez.
