Aston Villa idol '100%' backs Cameron Archer to thrive at Rangers after reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Cameron Archer to thrive at Rangers if he leaves Aston Villa on loan this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted Rangers are “crying out for” a striker like Archer.

TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook reported last week (10 June) that Rangers are among a number of clubs who all want to take the 20-year-old on a temporary deal for the 2022/23 campaign.

The Express & Star reported on Monday (13 June) that Steven Gerrard wants to assess Archer in pre-season as they head to Australia on tour.

The young striker is highly-rated by Gerrard and signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal with Villa in December – just a month after Gerrard swapped Ibrox for Villa Park.

Asked whether Archer would be a success at Rangers, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent.

“I look at Rangers and they are crying out for someone like him. He’s young, hungry and wants to impress.

“Steven Gerrard’s got that relationship with Rangers so I’m sure he’ll do them a favour wherever he can and it could work for both parties.

“You never know though, he could have a future at Aston Villa for the upcoming season.”

Archer scored seven times in 20 Championship games for Preston North End in the 2021-22 campaign after moving to Deepdale on loan in January.

His form earned him a first call-up to the England Under-21s squad and he scored four goals in four games in the recent international break.
