Aston Villa are lining up a move to sign Stade Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Football Insider sources understand.
Mendy has been earning rave reviews this season after playing a starring role in runaway leaders Reims’ successful promotion to France’s top flight from Ligue 2.
The athletic shot-stopper has conceded just 19 goals in 31 Ligue 2 matches, including keeping 17 clean sheets in a stunning campaign for Reims.
Mendy’s performances for Reims have brought him to the attention of several clubs across Europe with the goalkeeper regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers around.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Premier League promotion hopefuls Aston Villa and Cardiff are weighing up a move for Mendy, while Bristol City are also monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their squad for next season.
Villa are in the market for a new goalkeeper for next season with Sam Johnstone set to return to Manchester United following the end of his loan spell and Mendy has emerged on their radar.
Cardiff, who are in pole position to claim the second automatic promotion spot to the Premier League, are also looking to bolster their goalkeeping options for next season and they are ready to rival Villa for Mendy.
Reims are desperate to keep hold of Mendy as they prepare for life in Ligue 1 next season, but they are bracing themselves for firm interest in the goalkeeper this summer as his English suitors look to lure him away from France.
