Aston Villa will probably have to dip their toes in the free agent market this summer due to a lack of funds – and midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu would make a great addition to their squad.
The Telegraph reported in May that Steve Bruce has just £1million to spend on players ahead of next season, so he will have to take a look at some players who are available free of cost in order to improve his squad.
Defensive midfielder Mulumbu was one of many players to be released by Norwich at the end of their contracts, but he has shown in the past that he is a ruthless ball winner in the middle of the park.
While playing for Villa’s bitter rivals West Brom, the free agent emerged as an icon thanks to his aggressive style of play both on and off the ball, which is something that Bruce really needs to add to his side.
Mile Jedinak is currently the only player capable of playing in a deep lying role to try and win back possession, but he has shown during his debut year at Villa Park that he cannot be relied upon to stay fit so a back-up, or even a replacement is needed.
Mulumbu presents the perfect man for Bruce as he’s free, experienced and has a great understand of West Midlands football following a six-year spell at the Hawthorns.
He always enjoyed the big games while playing for West Brom and he has shown that he also has the ability to pop up with a goal every now and then, as Villa fans will probably know all too well.
Matches against Birmingham and Wolves next season will give Mulumbu the opportunity to play in those heated West Midlands affairs once more and he will no doubt be a top addition just for those matches alone.
In other Aston Villa news, this striker has confirmed he has signed a new contract at Villa Park.
