Kieran Maguire pinpoints 'strange' development after Aston Villa agree commercial deal
It is “strange” that Aston Villa recently took a step back from gambling sponsorship only to sign a new deal with another bookmaker.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively about Villa’s latest sponsorship deal.
The club announced a sleeve partnership with China-based online bookmaker OB Sports for the 2021-22 campaign on 22nd June.
The 2020-21 season was Villa’s first with front-of-shirt sponsor Cazoo after their deal with sports betting firm W88 expired.
The Government is currently reviewing betting sponsorship laws and independent reviews have proposed the idea of an outright ban.
Maguire questioned Villa’s sideways move but claimed that having Cazoo as the primary sponsor rather than a bookmaker does have its merits.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “It seems a little bit strange from Villa given that they moved to a front-of-shirt sponsor in Cazoo that is a non-betting sponsor.
“To now have a betting sponsor on the sleeve seems to be a bit of an inconsistency.
“Villa does have some positives in that the shirts that are on sale to kids do have the Cazoo name on the front of the shirt.
“Villa still have the benefit of selling shirts to younger fans with the full sponsor.
“Kids want the shirts that their heroes wear and that means a replica with the right sponsors.”
Aston Villa posted a mammoth £99.2million loss in their last set of financial results.
The club earned £10.4m in sponsorship and £13.4m from commercial avenues. over the accounting period.
