Aston Villa news: Agbonlahor thrilled by potential £50m Ferran Torres deal – ‘it’s a statement’
Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Aston Villa to complete a “statement” deal for Barcelona star Ferran Torres in the summer window.
The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted his old side can’t afford to move for “average” players in the off-season following their success in the 2022-23 campaign.
According to The Telegraph (4 May), Aston Villa are considering an ambitious move for Barcelona forward Torres this summer – with the Spain international set to cost around £50million.
The report claims Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic is also on the radar for Unai Emery’s side as the summer window approaches.
Torres, who has scored 15 goals in 35 Spain caps, last played in the Premier League for Man City – scoring 16 goals in 43 games across all competitions.
He has notched 14 goals in 67 games across all competitions since joining Barcelona in January 2022 – albeit not in a regular starting role.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’d be exciting, definitely.
“This transfer window, Aston Villa can’t be going in for average players.
“If we really want to go into Europe and stay there, we’ve got to push on.
“Unai Emery will know he has a squad of maybe 15 players who he is happy with. The rest will be free to move on.
“We need better quality.

“Torres would help Ollie Watkins, and I think it’d be a real statement signing.
“He’s only recently won trophies with Man City and he’s now about to win the league with Barcelona – it’s exciting.”
