Roberto Di Matteo has been given the go ahead to dump Aston Villa’s biggest earners if he decides they are not good enough for the club, according to a report.
As Villa’s horrendous season drew to a close, supporters directed their anger towards five key players at the heart of the club’s demise.
Joleon Lescott, Gabby Agbonlahor, Micah Richards, Brad Guzan, and Leandro Bacuna were all subject to passionate protests and taunts from the Villa fans and the Birmingham Mail claim that Di Matteo has been given the power to boot the five out of the club if he sees fit.
The new Villa hierarchy have reportedly told their manager that cut-price deals are willing to be done to get rid of any dead weight Di Matteo thinks the squad could be carrying.
However, most of the players are currently on holiday and a decision on any of the five senior players is not expected to take place until they return for pre-season.
Lescott angered fans with his careless attitude to relegation on social media, while Bacuna reportedly refused to play for Villa in the closing weeks of the season.
All five of the mentioned players are said to be in line for assessment, along with the rest of the squad, as Di Matteo gears up for a massive summer clearout.
Incoming owner Tony Xia has promised to spend in the region of £20 to £40million in his first summer at the club.
In other Villa news, the first arrival at Villa Park is set to be announced on Monday.
