Aston Villa player ratings v Wolves: Striker gets 4/10, defensive duo 5/10

By Will Butcher

Football Insider rates the Aston Villa players after they suffered a 1-0 defeat in a feisty Midlands derby against rivals Wolves at Molineux.

Sam Johnstone 5 – Should have done better in holding Nouha Dicko’s cross, which was spilt at the feet of Joe Mason who tapped in to an empty net.

Alan Hutton 7 – Kept Ivan Cavaleiro in his pocket throughout the match despite being nine years his senior. With his contract set to expire in the summer, Hutton will have done himself no harm in looking to earn a new deal.

James Chester 6 – Commanding aura at the back but could not stop his side’s leak of goals that has seen Chester keep just six clean sheets in 25 league and cup encounters.

Tommy Elphick 5 – Number of shaky errors at the back for Steve Bruce’s side as he came into the side to replace Nathan Baker.

Jordan Amavi 6 – Should have done more to stop Dicko’s cross in the lead up to the first goal, but was much more effective going forward. Needs to be better.

Leandro Bacuna 6 – Tried in vain to make Villa tick with a number of powerful runs from deep positions, but was well marshalled by versatile defender Conor Coady.

Mile Jedinak 6 – Kept things simple in the middle of the park, won a number of headers and performed well without catching the eye. Improvement on recent outings, though.

Aaron Tshibola 7 – One of Villa’s only players to have played well in the Midlands derby, as his pace in the middle of the park proved difficult to cope with.

Albert Adomah 6 – Despite possessing bags of pace, the winger was not given the opportunity to impress on the flank as Villa lacked creativity.

Ross McCormack 4 – Missed a golden chance in the first half, after good work from Amavi left him with a header from six yards out which he cushioned over. Nowhere near his £12million transfer fee.

Gabby Agbonlahor – 5 Non-existent. Hardly touched the ball in the first half and provided little impact as Villa’s striker.

Subs:

Jack Grealish (On for Tshibola, 59 mins) 7

Andre Green (On for Adomah, 67 mins) 6

Keinan Davis (On for Jedinak, 91 mins) 6
