Aston Villa tipped for system change v Arsenal tonight after final training session - Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Aston Villa to line up in a 4-3-3 formation against Arsenal on Friday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer admitted he does not like the back five system Dean Smith has used in recent weeks.

The 5-3-2 formation got its first run out in the 3-0 loss to Chelsea last month.

In the five league games Villa have lined up with a back five, they have won twice and lost three.

That includes defeats in the last two games to Tottenham and Wolves.

As quoted by Birmingham Live today (October 21), Smith admitted this season’s game against Arsenal at the Emirates will be different to last season’s when Villa ran riot with a 4-3-3 system.

Asked for his assessment of how Villa could line up in north London after their final training session, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think he’ll play the back five anymore.

“I feel like Dean Smith has played that formation because they were playing against Romelu Lukaku [and Chelsea] where they did well even though they lost.

“Then they played Man United and got a result, they played Spurs and were OK and then they played Wolves who play with five at the back so maybe he wanted to match them up.

“Arsenal play four at the back so I think Dean Smith will change his formation and go with the 4-3-3, I’ve always said I want to see Aston Villa in a 4-3-3, an attacking team.

“I don’t really like the five at the back. I like our centre-halves but with that formation, you’re going to have centre-halves on the ball a lot when they’re not as good on the ball as the midfielders.

“Villa will change that formation and look to play a 4-3-3.”
