Aston Villa tipped to replace 'tremendous' Steer with new signing after official news - McLeish
Alex McLeish has tipped Aston Villa to launch a bid for a new goalkeeper following Lovre Kalinic’s departure on loan.
The former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Dean Smith may look to replace Jed Steer as the backup option to Emiliano Martinez.
As confirmed on Sunday (July 11th), Kalinic has returned to Hajduk Split on loan for the 2021/22 campaign.
The shot-stopper also spent the second half of last season back at the club where he made his professional debut.
The 31-year-old’s exit means Steer and Martinez, both 28, are Smith’s remaining senior goalkeeping options.
However, McLeish suggested the Villans may dip into the market for a new number two.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they add another goalkeeper to that roster,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
I know Jed, he’s been there and has been around a long time. Has he played enough Premier League action or had enough higher-level action?
“That would be my only question, Maybe he has had enough. Maybe he is still at a brilliant level. He’s definitely been a tremendous goalkeeper during his career.
“I would think that, like most of the big clubs, Villa have got a lot of money. They’ve spent a lot of money last couple of years. I can see them going for a third goalie.”
Martinez played every minute of Villa’s Premier League matches following his move from Arsenal last season.
Steer made two League Cup appearances to take his total number of games for the club to 33.
