Aston Villa told to hijack Everton move for James Tarkowski after 'big' update - Agbonlahor

James Tarkowski would be a “perfect” signing for Aston Villa this summer, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed handing Tarkowski big wages would be worth it as he is a free transfer.

An Everton source told Football Insider on Monday (23 May) that they have offered the 29-year-old a contract worth £120,000-a-week and are keen to win the race for his signature.

Tarkowski is also attracting interest from Newcastle United and West Ham but Agbonlahor has urged his former side to enter the race.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Tarkowski would be perfect.

“You don’t even have to spend crazy money because he won’t have been on much at Burnley.

“I can picture him next to Mings next season. I think Gerrard is going to make a big statement with a centre-half and going for Tarkowski or someone else.

“He might have competition from Newcastle United and Everton.

“The fact you can get Tarkowski on a free just helps because it keeps the cost down and it makes sense.

“When someone is on a free transfer and they are a good player, those wages are what happens.

“Because you are not paying a transfer fee, the player gets more wages. That’s always been the case and there are loads of examples of free transfers who get a lump sum and high wages because there are different clubs are in for him.

“If £120,000-a-week is what is needed then under the circumstances of no transfer fee, I’d pay it because he’s a top, top defender.

“He deserves it. He’s been waiting to be on a free transfer.”

In other news, Aston Villa have set their sights on signing a star and are willing to sell a £25million ace to part-fund a deal.
