Agbonlahor: Aston Villa told to seal £20m Ward-Prowse deal after key update
Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Aston Villa should not pay more than £20million for James Ward-Prowse.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted the Southampton captain would be a “great addition” but the club are not desperate for a new midfielder.
Football Insider learned on 21 June Ward-Prowse is interested in a move to Villa Park as it would be an upgrade on Southampton.
It comes after this site learned on 16 June Villa’s owners are willing to throw their financial might behind a potential deal.
Ward-Prowse has four years left to run on his Saints contract and Agbonlahor has warned against overpaying.
“I think there’s every chance of it happening,” he told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But Aston Villa don’t need to pay more than what they should do for Ward-Prowse at his age. He’s a great player.
“As long as they get him at the right price, it would be a great signing. But they shouldn’t pay more than they need to.
“He’d be a good addition to the squad.
“At 26, a decent price is around £20million. He’d add quality to Aston Villa’s side but it’s not a signing you’re desperate to go through. We’ve still got a lot of good midfielders.”
Ward-Prowse enjoyed a fine campaign last season as his 38 Premier League starts yielded eight goals and seven assists.
The eight-time England international has found the net 30 times and provided 31 assists in 269 top-flight games for Southampton.
