Lewis Baker is in advanced talks to join Reading as he prepares to call a halt to his loan spell at Championship rivals Leeds United, Football Insider understands.
Chelsea are ready to cut short Baker’s season-long loan deal at Leeds at the midway point of the campaign after finding his first-team opportunities limited at Elland Road.
A well placed source has told Football Insider that Baker is set to undergo a medical at Reading in the next 24 hours and put the finishing touches to whirlwind transfer.
Baker joined Leeds on loan in the summer as the midfielder became Marcelo Bielsa’s first signing as Whites boss.
However, the 23-year-old has made just 13 appearances in all competitions for Leeds so far this season, with only two of those coming as starts in the Championship.
Baker made a rare start in last weekend’s FA Cup defeat to Queens Park Rangers and it looks like that could be his last appearance in a Leeds shirt after an underwhelming loan stint.
Chelsea are keen to loan out Baker again this month so that he can regular first-team football and valuable action under his belt.
Reading are hoping to bring in Baker to boost their fight against relegation from the Championship as Jose Gomes looks to strengthen his squad during this month’s transfer window.
Gomes has made midfield reinforcements one of his top priorities and hopes to add Baker to the signing of Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool this month.
In other Leeds United news, it can be revealed the club have opened preliminary talks to sign the leader scorer of the league leaders.
