‘Barcelona have made outrageous statement about signing Alexander Isak’

Newcastle United star Alexander Isak is a top target for several clubs following his outstanding performances at St James’ Park.

The Sweden international has scored 23 goals in 33 appearances during this campaign, having registered 25 strikes in 40 outings last season.

Football Insider revealed on 16 February Isak is seen as the “perfect” signing by Liverpool manager Arne Slot and the recruitment team at Anfield.

The 25-year-old got on the scoresheet in Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on 16 March.

Barcelona are understood to have watched Isak in action during his side’s 1-0 victory over West Ham earlier this month.

El Nacional reported on 23 March Isak will wait for an offer to join the La Liga giants in 2026 if Liverpool don’t make a move to sign him this summer.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Barcelona could be “getting paid to make outrageous statements” following their interest in the Newcastle forward.

Newcastle are set to offer Isak a record-breaking contract as they look to tie down his long-term future, with his current deal set to expire in 2028.

The striker made the move to St James’ Park for a club-record £63million fee from Real Sociedad in 2022.

Newcastle star Alexander Isak won’t agree Barcelona deal

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted there is no way Barcelona could afford to sign Isak.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m starting to think that Barcelona are getting paid for making outrageous statements.

“Maybe that’s how they’re earning some new money just now because it just seems an endless parade of impossible things they’re talking about.

“There is no chance they can get hold of Isak this summer, unless somehow they stopped being a socios and went public.

“That’s the only way that Barcelona could actually get some more money into the club.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen this summer, so there is no way.”

Liverpool in pole position to sign Newcastle target Marc Guehi

Football Insider revealed on 17 March Liverpool are in pole position to sign Marc Guehi after he’s been a top target for Newcastle.

The 24-year-old will have just 12 months left to run on his Crystal Palace contract in June.

This summer could be the last chance to cash in for Oliver Glasner’s side, with Guehi set to make a decision on where his long-term future will lie.
