Joey Barton: King must back-up promises made to Gerrard at Rangers

Former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton believes Steven Gerrard “must have had assurances” from Gers chairman Dave King over the backing he would get as Rangers manager – and that now he has to put up or risk the wrath of the fans.

Gerrard took the reins at Ibrox on Friday and Barton insists that the Liverpool icon must have been promised the finances to rebuild the squad he inherited before taking charge.

The new Fleetwood Town manager also admitted that he thinks Gerrard will be a success in management, claiming that “good principles” will “take you far in management.”

“I just think he is a really, really decent person and if you are a good person and you have got good principles then I think that takes you far in management,” Barton said, as quoted by The Herald.

“We all know you need finances as well and they are going to need to invest.

“If Steven has taken the job, he must have had assurances from Dave King and the board that he is going to get that. Whether he gets that or not, we will find out in the next six to 12 months.”

Football Insider verdict:

Gerrard needs money and Dave King has said he’ll be given money so it just a case of wait and see for now. The signings of Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield and Jamie Murphy would back up King’s claim that the Gers will be a “net investor” in the squad this summer with the only departures so far being loans ending or contracts expiring. If, come the close of the transfer window, King has reneged on his promise to back Gerrard with cash to strengthen the squad then he may have a bit more than just a disgruntled manager to deal with as fans expect to see their side in a position to seriously challenge bitter rivals Celtic this season and lift the club’s first piece of major silverware since 2011. Getting some of the deadwood currently in the squad away will go a long way to helping free more funds up for Gerrard to spend but the Gers boss can’t be sitting waiting on clubs picking up the dross he doesn’t want before he can move for the targets he does.
