Celtic defender scouted by Euro champions in win v Dundee – BBC pundit

By Danny Wright

Manchester United sent a scout to keep close tabs on Celtic’s League Cup win against Dundee at Dens Park on Wednesday night, according to a report.

BBC Sport’s live blog of the match [09:44pm] revealed that BBC Sportsound pundit Alan Stubbs told them that the Europa League champions had sent a recruitment expert north of the border for the midweek game in which the Hoops won 4-0.

It is understood that defender Kieran Tierney was the subject of the scout’s attendance and was also in the stands at Celtic Park when Paris Saint-Germain visited there in the Champions League last season.

John Hartson claimed in the summer transfer window that Man United had made Tierney, 20, their top transfer target, however no such move came to fruition and the Scotland international remains a Hoops player.

However it seems that United’s interest has not died down after jetting someone out to keep further tabs on the Isle of Man-born full-back.

Tierney has been in dazzling form for Celtic over the past few seasons and has began this campaign in similar fashion, scoring one goal and supplying two assists in 14 appearances across all competitions.

Football Insider Verdict

Tierney is a player that Celtic simply would struggle to replace, but ultimately, his future lies elsewhere. Eventually, the Scotland international will have to prove himself outside of Glasgow and a move to the Premier League would be a good opportunity for him to show that he can be one of the best full-backs in not only the UK but potentially Europe if things go accordingly. Celtic would have to demand a big price should the academy product ever leave, but with a team like Man United, they are likely to just throw money at the Scottish champions to get what they desire.
