BBC pundit claims latest Everton arrival would have been a perfect Arsenal fit

By Dominic Toner

BBC pundit Robbie Savage has described Ashley Williams as a “great signing” for Everton on Twitter.

Everton confirmed on Wednesday the signing of the defender, who has moved to Goodison Park on a three-year deal.

The former Wales international has written on his personal Twitter account that he thinks Ronald Koeman has completed a great piece of business.

Savage has explained that he can’t believe a big club like Arsenal have not made a move for Williams even though Arsene Wenger has said he is on the search for a new centre-back amid their defensive crisis.

Arsenal will be without senior defensive pair Gabriel and Per Mertesacker and Savage for months due to injuries sustained in pre-season.

Wales skipper Williams has become the third senior summer arrival at the Toffees this summer after the captures of Idrissa Gueye and Martin Stekelenburg.

Williams is now widely regarded as one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League, starting all but two of Swansea’s 38 league matches last season.

The defender joined Swansea in the 2007-08 season and made 352 appearances for the now established Premier League side.

Williams will be a direct replacement for John Stones, who completed a £47.5million transfer to Manchester City on Tuesday morning that demolished Everon’s transfer record.

In other Everton transfer news, Arsenal are set to hijack the club’s move for a Premier League striker.
