Ben Brereton Diaz jets in today for Southampton medical – sources

Southampton target Ben Brereton Diaz is flying into England this afternoon as he prepares to complete his medical with the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Talks will continue between the Chilean and the Premier League outfit over what is expected to be a loan deal for the Villarreal forward.

Football Insider revealed yesterday that a deal has been agreed upon between the two clubs, and now the final details need to be ironed out.

The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United as the Blades suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Diaz will return to the English top flight with the Saints following their promotion after winning the playoff final last season.

Diaz failed to register a single goal or assist during his 20 appearances for Villarreal as he now looks for a new challenge.

Southampton will use Ben Brereton Diaz to replace Che Adams

Southampton have prioritised signing a new striker in this window after Che Adams departed St Mary’s after his contract expired.

The Scotland international joined Torino this summer, leaving a hole in the Saints squad.

Adams made 191 appearances for Southampton during his stint with the club, scoring 48 goals and providing 20 assists.

Diaz isn’t the only striker the Saints want to bring into the club this summer.

Football Insider revealed that Southampton are plotting a move for West Brom’s Brandon Thomas-Asante before the transfer deadline.
