Ben Davies delivers verdict on impressive Tottenham defensive record

By Matt Farr

Tottenham defender Ben Davies believes the club’s impressive rearguard this season allowed their attacking stars to flourish.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side boast the best defensive record in the Premier League this season, having conceded just 22 goals from their 31 matches.

The Tottenham chief is blessed with an array of consistent and reliable defensive assets, starting with his goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who has kept 12 Premier League clean sheets this term.

Their solidarity stretches to the unstoppable central-midfield duo Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, who have been ever-present for Tottenham throughout the campaign.

Meanwhile, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have formed a formidable partnership at the back, with full-backs Danny Rose and Kyle Walker flanking them superbly.

Davies, who has earned a place in the starting eleven in the absence of the injured Rose, insists that positioning has been the key to their success.

He said, as quoted by the Mirror: “We do a lot of work on being in the right positions – it’s not about defending the last-ditch tackle. It’s about stopping things at source.

“Our back four this year has been chopped and changed. But whoever has come in has to put in a good performance. It’s not just the back four. We tend to play with two screening midfielders who do an unbelievable job.

“You can then free up the talents of Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli. They get the opportunities to work their magic.”

The Tottenham attacking quartet have contributed an incredible 46 goals 31 assists between them in the Premier League this season, as the north London club sit second with seven games remaining.

But Davies insists their work has been made easier without having to worry about what happens in the defensive third.

Tottenham thrashed Watford 4-0 in their last encounter, their sixth back-to-back victory, and Davies was part of another untroubled defensive effort.

In other Tottenham news, Dele Alli has responded to comparisons with this Premier League legend.
