Ben Johnson quits West Ham as Leeds United and Rangers swoop – sources
Ben Johnson will leave West Ham upon the expiry of his contract amid strong interest from the likes of Leeds United and Rangers.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Johnson, 24, will now leave the London Stadium despite efforts to convince him to remain beyond this summer.
The right-back had been expected to leave at the end of June, and is keen to take advantage of his free-agent status by securing a key role elsewhere on a new long-term deal.
Football Insider revealed on 20 May that late attempts had been made to extend Johnson’s contract, but he had already planned to leave the London Stadium.
Football Insider has previously reported that Leeds and Rangers have been closely monitoring the player’s situation and have asked to be kept informed of developments.
Ben Johnson to leave West Ham as Leeds and Rangers eye swoop
Johnson made 25 appearances for the Hammers in the recently passed season, with 15 of those coming from the bench as he averaged 44.9 minutes per game across the season.
That role off of the bench had pushed the right-back to search for other options in search of more regular first-team football which is on offer at both Leeds and Rangers.
He is primarily a right-back, but has recently been utilised as a left-back, wing-back, midfielder and even a winger by David Moyes with his energy from the bench used to solidify the team late in games.
Sources say Johnson’s versatility is highly valued by clubs in the Premier League and Championship, as well as at Ibrox.
Having been with the Hammers since the age of seven, Johnson progressed through the academy system and made his 100th senior appearance in February.

His time at the London Stadium is now set to come to an end, and he will have the choice of where he ends up next without the need for a transfer fee – inspiring further interest in his signature.
Former West Ham forward Frank McAvennie told Football Insider earlier this year that the club should let Johnson leave for free amid speculation over his future.
