Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that defender Jesus Gamez has had to undergo minor surgery on an ankle issue as he delivered an injury update ahead of the clash against West Ham.
The Magpies go into the showdown at the London Stadium on a nine game winless streak, which has garnered just one point from a possible 27 for the Spanish boss and his players.
Their dreadful run of form has left them languishing in the relegation zone in 18th, just three points off the very foot of the table, currently occupied by Swansea City, while one point off both Stoke City and Bournemouth in 17th and 16th respectively.
Coming into the clash off the back of a 1-0 defeat away to Arsenal, Benitez has revealed that there are multiple injury issues for the club to contend with, including Gamez undergoing an operation and striker Aleksandar Mitrovic out with a back problem.
He told the press, as quoted by the Chronicle’s Chris Waugh on his personal Twitter account: “Mitrovic is still out with a problem with his back & is out for 1 week to 10 days.
“Gamez has had an operation on his ankle, a little one. We also have some knocks which we must decide on who can play.”

The Spanish full back has very much been a fringe player at Newcastle since arriving on a free transfer in the summer of 2016, and has made just two appearances this season to take his total number of outings to 10 for the Magpies.
In other Newcastle United news, the club are expected to make an official move for a 13-goal hot shot.
