'Someone to compete' - Benitez gives definitive update on Newcastle transfer targets
By Russell Edge
Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has revealed the club will target a left back in the January transfer window as he awaits for Paul Dummett to return from injury.
The Welsh defender has been ruled out of action since the opening match of the Premier League season against Tottenham, as he was forced to limp off in the first half.
Fans have not seen the 25-year-old near the first team squad since, and with fellow left back Massadio Haidara also ruled out, Benitez has had to make use of what he has had at his disposal.
As a result, natural right backs Javier Manquillo and Jesus Gamez and centre back Chancel Mbemba have all filled in, and the Spanish manager has revealed they will have to continue to do so for at least another month.
However he insisted that he would be targeting a natural replacement for Dummett over the winter transfer window, although paid credit to his current players for the role they have played.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle (06/10, 07:00), he said: “We knew it could be long, and still we have to wait.
“At least we have to wait maybe one month, and maybe more because it’s part of the process.
“He (Dummett) will be back with us in time, we already working hard to try and reduce the time.
“If we can bring someone to compete with him [in January], it will be fine but at the moment I’m happy with the job the others are doing.”
Dummett has established himself as one of the club’s top performers in recent seasons, having broken through the youth ranks on Tyneside.
It means that he is the second longest serving player in the senior side, behind only goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
He has made 122 appearances for the club since his debut back in an FA Cup defeat to Brighton in 2013, coming off the bench at half time.
