Benitez: Newcastle should have new faces in before next match - all in one man's hands
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that the club should have brought in at least one new face prior to the club’s FA Cup clash with Chelsea next weekend as the January window edges to a close.
The Magpies are yet to bring in any new signings during the winter market, while there have also been no exits from the senior side, with just a handful of reserve team players heading out on loan.
It comes after Benitez saw just five arrivals during the summer, as well as tying Christian Atsu to a permanent deal, but he insists that he expects that to change over the coming seven days, with the deals now all in the hands of owner Mike Ashley.
He told the Shields Gazette: “It’s going to be a very important week for us.
“We’ve been working very hard to make sure we have the names who can help the team to stay up. We have the names.
“We gave a list to the owner. Now, it’s just a case of waiting to see if we can do what we have to do.
“I expect someone, but we will see. I don’t know how many we can get. It’s a little bit late now. If they have experience in the Premier League, it’ll be easier for us.
“But, if not, they have to have different characteristics and give us something that we don’t have at the moment.”
Newcastle will face Antonio Conte’s side at Stamford Bridge next Sunday after having seen off League Two title hopefuls Luton Town 3-1 at St James’ Park, while the Blues were forced to secure a win in a penalty shootout after being held to draws in both ties by Championship side Norwich City.
The Magpies’ last outing saw them lose 3-1 to Manchester City, Sergio Aguero netting a hat trick while Jacob Murphy scored his first league goal for the club, while Eden Hazard starred in Chelsea’s 4-0 thrashing of Brighton on Saturday.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are eyeing up a move for a World Cup winner available on a long-term loan at £75,000-a-week.
