Benitez reveals triple Newcastle blow for clash v West Brom

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that none of the senior squad’s three injury layoffs will be available for the clash against West Brom on Tuesday.

The Magpies have been missing both centre back and club captain Jamaal Lascelles and winger Christian Atsu for the last two games, having joined long term absentee Paul Dummett on the sidelines through injury.

While all three are looking to recover over the coming weeks, Benitez confirmed via the club’s official Twitter account that none of the trio would be returning when the club travel to the Hawthorns on Tuesday to take on West Brom, although stated that Mikel Merino was fully fit after making his comeback against Watford over the weekend.

Lascelles and Atsu, who had appeared in every one of the opening 11 league games of the season, both limped off in the 1-0 home defeat against Bournemouth, while Dummett has been out since the opening match of the season.

The update will come as a blow to Benitez’s hopes against the Baggies, with Newcastle on a four match losing streak following their 3-0 defeat to Watford on Saturday, as all three would be expected to be named in the starting line up if fully fit.

Ahead of Tuesday’s clash, West Brom, who are currently without a permanent manager after sacking Tony Pulis, sit in 17th, one place and one point off the relegation zone, and just three points behind 13th placed Newcastle.
