Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is sweating over the fitness of Chancel Mbemba after he suffered an injury scare while playing for DR Congo, according to a report.
The Newcastle Chronicle claims that Mbemba, 23, was forced off in the 59th minute of his nation’s 2-2 draw with Tunisia on Tuesday after he had earlier found the back of the net.
It is understood that the DR Congo Football Association is yet to confirm any details of the injury and it may be the case that the defender was taken off the pitch as a precaution.
However it is not something Benitez wants to be concerning himself with at the moment as his side is already suffering with injuries to key defenders.
Paul Dummett, Florian Lejeune and DeAndre Yedlin have all been sidelined recently and Mbemba, who is usually a centre-back, has been forced to fill in at left-back due to the injury crisis.
Despite playing out of his comfort zone, the ex-Anderlecht man has given a good account for himself in recent weeks while playing at left-back, especially in the narrow loss at Huddersfield.
It appears that Benitez may be forced to consider giving Mbemba a more prominent role in his squad this season after playing all four matches across all competitions last month.
