'I can see where Gary Neville's coming from' - Exclusive: Bent sends blunt Leeds message

Darren Bent admits it is “unfair” that Leeds United receive a nominal fee of TV rights money in comparison to the Premier League.

The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that fans play their part in the disparity between the top-two divisions with their demands for televised Premier League football.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has urged there to be a re-evaluation of how television money is distributed in England, with a gulf of £97million between last place in the top flight and first place in the Championship.

The former Manchester United defender said: “You’ve got the bottom club in the Premier League gaining £100million and the top club in the EFL, Leeds United, getting £3million then you must see the disconnect and the disproportionate financial reward.”

Bent admits that the current system has its flaws but insists that the only answer is for clubs like Leeds to get promoted to the upper echelons of English football.

Bent told Football Insider: “We know what it’s like, we’re all probably victims of it in regards to we know who we want to watch on TV and who we don’t want to watch, that plays a big part.

“It’s unfair because a team like Leeds, who have been exciting to watch only get £3million and Norwich get £100million but at the end of the day it’s the power of the Premier League.

“Everyone wants to watch every Premier League game and for me, there are some Premier League games where I’m like: ‘Ugh, it’s not a great watch,’ but it’s the Premier League so we’ll always watch it.

“I can understand where Gary Neville’s coming from but that’s the nature of the beast, unfortunately. If you want the big revenue from TV money then get yourself in the Premier League.”

Leeds currently sit one point clear of West Brom at the top of the Championship table, with nine games left to play.

Norwich meanwhile are six points adrift of safety at the foot of the Premier League.
