Newcastle United are favourites to sign Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
SkyBet have the Magpies priced at 6/1 to complete a swoop for Torres, 33, after the Daily Mirror reported earlier this month that the forward’s representatives notified Rafa Benitez that he wanted to leave Atletico on loan.
Southampton (8/1) are the only other team really seen to be in the running while West Ham (16/1) and Everton (25/1) are at much longer prices.
Torres has struggled to earn first-team football under Diego Simeone this season and has started just one La Liga game out of the 12 he has been available for.
Across all competitions, the 110-times Spain international has made 13 appearances but has failed to score a single goal.
However Torres is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, especially from his spell at Liverpool.
He scored a stunning 81 goals in a total of 142 appearances on Merseyside as the Reds enjoyed what was one of their best spells in the Premier League era.
In total, the Spaniard has scored 85 goals in 212 Premier League outings as his ratio took a bit of a blow with an unsuccessful move to Chelsea with cost £50million in January 2011 – a British record at the time.
