Betting update: Arsenal and Liverpool favourites to sign 30-time international midfielder
By Will Butcher
Arsenal and Liverpool are considered joint favourites to sign Sporting Libson midfielder William Carvalho, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
The Sun claim both sides are targeting the 25-year-old, with West Brom also interested in making a £30million offer for the holding midfield ace.
Sky Bet have installed Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal at 5/1 to sign the 30-time Portugal international, who has continued to shine for Sporting in Portugal’s top tier.
This season, Carvalho has made a huge 43 league and cup appearances at the base of Jorge Jesus’ midfield, but has failed to help his side beat Porto and Benfica in the race for the title.
Sporting sit in third place with one game left to play, while Porto sit in second nine points above Carvalho’s side. Benfica sit five points clear at the top.

Known for his intricate array of passing, Carvalho is considered one of Europe’s best holding midfielders yet to move to one of the continent’s biggest leagues.
He has made a huge 155 appearances for his current side since making his debut back in April 2011 at just 18 years of age, scoring 10 goals and laying on a further 12 assists.
With a contract at the Estadio Jose Alvalade until 2020, Carvalho will require a huge fee if he is to be allowed to leave.
Football Insider verdict:
Arsenal desperately need central midfield additions. Francis Coquelin, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny have all failed to provide the standard required in an Arsenal shirt, and their uninspiring displays in the middle of the park could be largely blamed for their disappointing season in both the Premier League and in Europe. On the other side of the coin, Liverpool are in the same boat. Emre Can is yet to sign a new deal with the Reds, and Lucas Leiva is set to leave the club in six weeks’ time when his contract expires. Captain Jordan Henderson has been injured for much of the 2016-17 campaign, and bringing in Carvalho would help solve Jurgen Klopp’s problem position.
In other Arsenal transfer news, this 27-year-old should leave the Emirates Stadium after the reported signing of a new defender.
