Mega-bid tabled: Everton confident of smashing transfer record within days – report

By Danny Wright

Everton have tabled a £40million mega-bid for Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to a report.

The Telegraph claims that the Toffees are confident of completing a deal for the 27-year-old within the next few days as Ronald Koeman’s expensive overhaul of his squad continues.

It is understood that the fee paid for Sigurdsson will smash Everton’s current transfer record spend by £10million, which was splashed on Jordan Pickford’s transfer from Sunderland in Koeman’s first summer signing.

The report says that Sigurdsson has said his goodbyes to his Swansea team mates and adds that the Welsh club have not responded to Everton’s bid yet, but the Merseysiders believe that it will be big enough to land Koeman’s top summer target.

Sigurdsson has been in hot form for Swansea over the last couple of season, scoring ten goals and supplying 13 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions last term.

The 50-times Iceland international, who is known for his stunning ability at set-pieces, has previously had spells with Tottenham, Reading, Hoffenheim and Crewe.

Football Insider Verdict

Koeman hasn’t been afraid to strengthen his squad and it is said that this bid for Sigurdsson would take his spending over £140million before reaching mid-July. It’s a huge sign of intent from the Blues, who could seriously mount a challenge for a Champions League spot next season if their new recruits hit the ground running. They have made some of the money spent back on Romelu Lukaku’s sale, but Sigurdsson’s arrival could spell the end of Ross Barkley’s time at Goodison Park. The England international is in the final year of his contract and Koeman should look to try and cash in on him as soon as possible. Other clubs might begin to come forward with offers short of his valuation after Sigurdsson comes in.
