Big-name Championship trio want Leeds senior man after midweek admission - report

By Alex Stevens

Three of the Championship’s biggest clubs are keen to take advantage of Garry Monk’s contract situation at Leeds, according to a report.

The Daily Star claim Norwich, Nottingham Forest and Derby are all closely monitoring the Leeds manager after his transformation of the team’s fortunes this season.

Monk, 37, took over a struggling side and has made them virtually certain play-off contenders on shoestring budget dwarfed by many of his rivals, including that of big-spending Norwich.

The 2015-16 Premier League club, ex-European Cup winners Forest and former top-tier champions Derby have reportedly all been struck by Monk’s work at Elland Road.

The former Swansea boss revealed on Wednesday afternoon that he has not opened talks with the Yorkshire giants about extending his 12-month contract, which expires in the summer.

This has paved the way for rival clubs to take a strong interest in a highly rated manager who has already been hailed by veteran Championship bosses Mick McCarthy and Neil Warnock as the division’s manager of the year.

Forest have been without a permanent manager since sacking Philippe Montanier in January, with Gary Brazil the interim boss until the summer.

Derby appointed Steve McClaren for a second time this season but they are 11th in the Championship and have only faint promotion hopes.

Norwich have a more realistic chance of clinching a play-off spot but their form has been mixed in recent months and they are in eighth, nine points adrift of Leeds.

Monk took over a team that finished 13th last season and, despite Leeds making a net profit in the transfer market, has taken the side to unexpected heights.

Leeds are fourth in the Championship with a haul of 61 points and are well placed to secure one of the four play-off spots.

Automatic promotion is far less likely given the dominance in the division of leaders Newcastle and second-placed Brighton, who are 10 points clear of Monk’s side.

Leeds in action on Friday night when they aim to continue their promotion charge with victory against struggling Birmingham at St Andrews.

In other Leeds transfer news, the club are to pounce and re-sign a 23-year-old after a £10million transfer is all but sealed.
