Brendan Rodgers could convince Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham if he takes the vacant manager’s position.
That’s according to former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ manager hunt.
Spurs have not given up hope of landing Rodgers, who is their number one choice after Julian Nagelsmann agreed to join Bayern Munich.
It could be a summer of change at Tottenham as this site understands Kane is ‘hell bent’ on leaving the club.
McAvennie claims Rodgers could convince Kane to stay at Tottenham as Jose Mourinho managed to do just that when he was first appointed.
“Brendan could come in and say to Kane ‘listen, I can guarantee you trophies, stay with me and we’ll do it’,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“That’s big, it might help him [Kane] because he was looking at moving before Mourinho came in and he ended up staying.
“Now it’s all open again because Mourinho’s gone but maybe someone like Rodgers could get him to stay.
“What goes on at Tottenham, I don’t know. There’s a stink there now after all of the Super League stuff.
“It’ll take a long time for that to go and maybe Kane will want to get away from that.”
Kane is at the top of the Premier League charts for both goals and assists this season but Spurs may fail to qualify for the Champions League despite his own impressive form.
Ryan Mason will oversee Tottenham’s last five Premier League games of the season following the sacking of Mourinho last week.
