Bilic confirms 26-year-old will miss West Ham clash v Man United, laments big blow

By Harvey Byrne

Slaven Bilic has confirmed that Diafra Sakho will miss West Ham’s EFL Cup tie against Manchester United on Wednesday evening and could be out for a “few weeks.”

The Sky Sports website reported on Monday that the 26-year-old would undergo a scan on the hamstring injury he suffered in the league meeting with United on Sunday.

The Senegal international opened the scoring in his club’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and also became the first striker to bag for the Hammers this campaign.

Now Bilic confirmed in his pre-United press conference, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter page, that Sakho is set for a spell on the sidelines.

Bilic also showed his disappointment for the injury, stating that Sakho is a vital player for the squad.

Sakho had only just returned from a three-month lay-off with a back injury.

He was expected to help the east London club improve on their disappointing 16th placed position in the league.

However, his injury could not have come at a worse time for the side.

West Ham will face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday in the EFL quarter-final stage.

They will then welcome Arsenal to the Olympic Stadium on Saturday before travelling to face Liverpool to bring an end to their run of difficult fixtures.

Andy Carroll returned to training following a three-month lay-off last Friday, but the United fixture may come too soon for him.

This means summer signing Simone Zaza could come back into the side, or one of Andre Ayew, Ashley Fletcher or Michail Antonio could replace the injured Sakho.
