‘Boom’ – Exclusive: Pundit tips Celtic spending spree as ‘£11m+ in the kitty’
The £11.5million sale of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen could help Celtic fund a squad rebuild at the end of the season, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England and Manchester City defender tipped more players to follow the 20-year-old out of the door at Parkhead.
Celtic confirmed the sale of Frimpong to the Bundesliga side last week and the Daily Record report the fee is in excess of £10million and could rise to £11.5million with add-ons.
This site understands Celtic are hoping to wrap up the signing of Preston North End’s Ben Davies on a pre-contract deal but the Hoops have not added to their squad this month.
Celtic are now 23 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, out of Europe and the Scottish League Cup and Mills has insisted the Glasgow giants are best served looking ahead to next season.
“It frees up wages, it’s £11million-plus into the kitty,” Mills told Football Insider.
“You start to think ‘Ok, we’ve already started to recoup some money’. I’m sure there will be more players let go.
“It just gives you an opportunity to maybe plan for next season because they’ve got the money there.
“You’re not thinking ‘Right OK, come the end of the season, we need to get these players out before others come in. We’ve got that one out the door, so we can go out early May, June and go we want these signings in.’ Then boom. They can get it done.”
At the beginning of this season, Celtic added goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas, forward Albian Ajeti and midfielder David Turnbull for seven-figure fees while Shane Duffy and Diego Laxalt moved on loan.
With the exception of Turnbull, all of the Hoops’ summer additions have struggled in Glasgow.
