Borna Barisic backed to join ‘top’ Championship club after Rangers update – pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Borna Barisic could move to a “top” Championship side if he leaves Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic and West Ham striker said Barisic is not good enough to play in the Premier League.

According to the Daily Mail (13 August), newly promoted Nottingham Forest are interested in signing the 29-year-old.

The Croatia international currently has two years remaining on his contract at Ibrox.

The left-back played 90 minutes in the Gers’ Champions League playoff against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday (16 August).

The game finished 2-2 at Ibrox ahead of the second leg of the fixture next week (24 August).

When asked if Barisic is good enough for the Premier League, McAvennie told Football Insider: “No I don’t think so, not at the moment.

The championship, yes. If he goes to the Premier League they’ll get him ready before they put him in, whatever team buys him. He won’t be in the team for three or four months. That’s what they do, they get them ready for the Premier League.

I think top championship would be a good fit, he’s a decent player. Would I want him in a Premier League club that’s fighting relegation? No. It’s got to be mid-table because I think if he’s put under pressure it can get the best of him. If he’s fighting for relegation, I don’t think he’s that kind of player.

Rangers

Barisic made 43 appearances across all competitions for Rangers last season.

During those outings he provided three assists.
